Leaking Shower in Brisbane? 7 Signs It’s Time to Regrout

Most Brisbane homeowners don’t notice a leaking shower on day one. It starts small: a hairline crack, a darker line between tiles, a musty smell that never quite goes away. By the time water stains appear on the wall next door, the repair is usually bigger and more expensive than it needed to be.

Here is how to spot the problem early, what actually causes it, and what a proper fix involves.

Why grout fails so often in Brisbane

Grout is cement-based and naturally porous. Every shower, every steam-filled morning and every humid Queensland summer pushes moisture into it. Over the years, a few things happen:

  • Grout shrinks and cracks as it ages, opening small gaps around each tile.
  • Silicone joints break down at corners and where the wall meets the floor. These joints are meant to flex, and eventually they peel or split.
  • Mould settles in wherever moisture lingers, especially in warm, humid conditions.

None of this means your bathroom was badly built. It’s simply what grout and sealant do over time, which is why they need to be maintained.

7 signs your shower needs attention

  1. Cracked or crumbling grout. If it flakes away when you run a fingernail along it, it’s no longer protecting anything.
  2. Black, green or pink staining that returns after cleaning. Regrowth suggests moisture is sitting below the surface.
  3. Loose or hollow-sounding tiles. Tap gently. A hollow sound can mean water has weakened the adhesive underneath.
  4. Discoloured or peeling silicone in corners and along the base.
  5. A persistent musty smell even when the bathroom looks clean.
  6. Damp patches, paint bubbling or staining on the wall or ceiling on the other side of the shower.
  7. Water pooling or slow drying around the shower floor.

One sign alone may be cosmetic. Two or three together deserve a proper inspection.

Will regrouting fix a leaking shower?

Sometimes, but it depends on the cause, and honest tradespeople should tell you which case you’re in.

Regrouting is often the right fix when the leak comes from deteriorated grout or failed silicone. Removing the old grout and replacing it with fresh, waterproof, mould-resistant grout and new sealant restores the surface barrier and stops water getting behind the tiles.

It may not be enough when the waterproof membrane beneath the tiles has failed. Grout is the first line of defence, not the last. If the membrane is compromised, surface repairs alone won’t solve it, and a good contractor will tell you so before you spend money. Australian standards for waterproofing domestic wet areas (AS 3740) exist for this reason.

That’s why a proper assessment matters more than a quick patch.

What a proper regrout involves

A quality job is more than smearing new grout over old:

  • The old grout is removed to a consistent depth so the new material bonds properly.
  • Joints are cleaned and prepared, and any cracked or loose tiles are repaired or replaced.
  • Fresh grout is applied, followed by new silicone in the movement joints.
  • The surface is sealed and left to cure before the shower is used.

Skipping the preparation is the most common reason a cheap regrout fails within a year or two.

How long does a regrout last?

With good materials, careful workmanship and sensible upkeep, regrouted surfaces can last many years. Lifespan depends on the products used, how much moisture the area sees and how well it’s maintained. Grout Legends backs its full shower regrouting with a 7-year waterproof warranty (subject to terms and conditions), which is a useful benchmark when you’re comparing quotes.

Simple habits that extend the life of your grout

  • Run the exhaust fan during and after showers, or open a window.
  • Squeegee walls and floor when you can, and don’t leave wet towels on the floor.
  • Clean with a gentle, pH-appropriate cleaner. Harsh acids can eat into grout.
  • Reseal grout periodically as recommended by your installer.
  • Deal with small cracks early, since repairing early costs far less than repairing water damage.

Why act sooner rather than later?

Water rarely stays where it starts. Once it gets behind tiles it can affect adhesive, timber framing, plasterboard and neighbouring rooms. Mould can follow. A repair that might have been a regrout can turn into a strip-out and retile. If you’re preparing to sell, visible grout and silicone problems also stand out quickly at inspections.
