Is Your Shower Leaking? 7 Warning Signs Brisbane & Morayfield Homeowners Shouldn’t Ignore

Brisbane and Morayfield’s warm, humid climate is great for outdoor living, but it’s tough on bathrooms. Steam, summer storms and daily showers keep tiled areas damp for long stretches, and over time that moisture finds its way into tiny gaps in grout and silicone.

The tricky part? A leaking shower rarely announces itself. Water can travel behind tiles for months before you see any real damage. By then, you may be dealing with mould, rotting cabinetry or damaged flooring.

The good news is that most leaks give off early warning signs. Here are seven to watch for.

1. Cracked, crumbling or missing grout

Grout is the first line of defence between your shower and the walls and floor behind it. When it cracks, shrinks or crumbles, water can seep straight through. Run your eye along the lines between your tiles, especially near the floor and in the corners. If you can see gaps or powdery grout, it’s time for attention, and professional grout replacement removes the damaged grout and replaces it with a durable new finish.

2. Loose, hollow or lifting tiles

Tap gently on your shower tiles. A hollow sound, or tiles that move or lift, often means moisture has weakened the bond underneath. Don’t ignore a single loose tile, because it’s often a sign of a bigger problem nearby. Our tile repair service fixes cracked or damaged tiles before the problem spreads.

3. Black or pink mould that keeps coming back

If you scrub your grout clean and the mould returns within weeks, the cause may not be surface dirt at all. Persistent mould can mean water is being trapped in or behind the grout. In Queensland’s humidity, mould thrives, but constant regrowth in the same spot is worth investigating. Read about our mould removal and prevention service, or ask us about epoxy grout, a stain-resistant option for high-moisture areas.

4. Peeling, discoloured or mouldy silicone

The silicone seals around your shower corners, edges and screen are designed to flex and keep water out. Once they peel, split or turn black, they stop doing their job. Silicone doesn’t last forever, and replacing it is one of the simplest ways to prevent a leak. Learn more about our silicone seals and shower screen resealing services.

5. A musty smell you can’t explain

If your bathroom smells damp or earthy even after cleaning and airing it out, moisture may be hiding somewhere you can’t see. Trust your nose. It often notices a problem before your eyes do.

6. Stains, bubbling paint or damp patches outside the shower

Check the walls and ceilings next to and below your bathroom, as well as the carpet or flooring outside the shower. Bubbling paint, water stains, soft plasterboard or a damp patch near the shower wall are classic signs that water is escaping.

7. Water pooling or draining slowly

If water collects on the floor outside the shower, or your shower floor stays wet long after use, there may be a problem with the sealing or falls (the slope that directs water to the drain). Pooling water adds extra stress to grout and seals.

Do I need regrouting, or a full renovation?

Here’s the reassuring part. If your tiles are still firmly attached and not cracked, regrouting is usually enough. In most cases, removing the damaged grout and replacing it with fresh, waterproof grout, along with new mould-resistant silicone, restores the area without a costly renovation. We also handle tiled area regrouting for balconies, laundries and other wet areas.

A full tile replacement is generally only needed when tiles are broken, hollow or lifting. If the waterproofing layer under the tiles has failed, a proper inspection is the only way to know for sure, and we’ll always be upfront about what we find.

What does professional regrouting involve?

At Grout Legends, we never “patch over” old grout. Fresh grout needs a clean base to bond properly, so we:

  • Remove all damaged and loose grout completely
  • Clean and prepare the joints
  • Apply new grout, with colour matching available
  • Replace old silicone with premium mould-resistant silicone
  • Clean up the work area before we leave

Most bathrooms, showers and balconies take around 3 to 6 hours, depending on size and condition. You can walk on the tiled floor after a few hours, but we recommend waiting 24 hours before using a freshly regrouted and resealed shower. Have more questions? Why act early?

Small repairs are almost always cheaper and faster than repairing water damage. Fixing a cracked grout line or tired silicone now can save you from mould remediation, damaged cabinetry or a failed building inspection when it’s time to sell or rent.
